India has suffered a major setback ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy as star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out due to injury. According to reports, Bumrah informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his unavailability for the tournament. The BCCI has officially confirmed that Bumrah will miss the 2025 Champions Trophy due to a lingering back injury.
Indian media reports suggest that Bumrah has been struggling with his back injury and has not regained full fitness. As a result, Harshit Rana has been named as his replacement in the squad. Additionally, in another surprising selection move, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been dropped from the final squad, with 33-year-old spinner Varun Chakravarthy taking his place.
Bumrah initially sustained the injury during India’s recent tour of Australia, where he was unable to bowl in the second innings of the fifth Test in Sydney. During the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, he bowled 151.2 overs across five Tests and emerged as the leading wicket-taker with 32 scalps. Although he was named in the ODI squad against England, he did not play any matches and was later included in India’s provisional 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy.
Medical reports indicate that Bumrah has not yet fully recovered from his back injury, which also forced him to miss India’s white-ball series against England. His latest scans revealed that he is not ready to resume bowling, and there is no confirmed timeline for his return. The BCCI medical team in Bengaluru will continue to monitor his rehabilitation.
This marks the second ICC tournament that Bumrah has missed due to injury, having previously been ruled out of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, which led to him undergoing surgery.
Harshit Rana Replaces Bumrah in Indian Squad
Harshit Rana, who made his ODI debut during the ongoing series against England, has been named as Bumrah’s replacement. The ICC had set February 11 as the final date for submitting the playing XI for the Champions Trophy, and any further changes will require approval from the tournament’s technical committee.
