Karachi: England cricket team’s captain, Jos Buttler, has resigned from his leadership role. Buttler stated that the team did not perform well under his captaincy in the Champions Trophy and that England’s results during his tenure were disappointing. He expressed his desire to focus on his personal cricket performance.
Jos Buttler’s last match as captain will be against South Africa in the Champions Trophy. It is worth mentioning that two days ago, in a crucial Group B match of the 2025 Champions Trophy, Afghanistan defeated England in a thrilling contest, knocking them out of the semi-final race.
While chasing Afghanistan’s target of 326 runs, England was bowled out for 317 despite Joe Root’s valiant innings of 120 runs.
In the press conference, Jos Buttler said, “This is the right decision for me, the right decision for the team, and hopefully, someone else can come in and work alongside (Brendon McCullum) to take the team back to where it should be.”
He further stated that it was clear this tournament was crucial for his captaincy in terms of results. He added that while he feels sad and disappointed, he believes he can no longer continue in the role.
Decision on England’s New Captain in Two Weeks: Brendon McCullum
England cricket team’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, has stated that a decision on the team’s new captain will be made within two weeks. Speaking at a press conference in Karachi, McCullum confirmed that March 1 will be Jos Buttler’s final match as captain.
He added that they would try to make Buttler’s last match a memorable one and expressed sadness over the way his captaincy tenure is ending.

McCullum further praised Buttler’s leadership, highlighting his crucial role over the past two years, including leading England to a World Cup victory. He emphasized that no one can take that achievement away from him.
He also acknowledged Buttler’s contributions even in the absence of key players and believes he will remain an important part of the team in the future.
McCullum revealed that Buttler informed him last night about his decision to step down as captain. He admitted that England had the potential to win both of their matches in the tournament but missed key opportunities. He stressed the importance of utilizing England’s cricketing talent effectively.
It is worth mentioning that England lost their first two Group B matches in the Champions Trophy against Australia and Afghanistan.
