The latest change replaces the previous dual-button system for voice and video calls with a single call button, now positioned at the top of individual and group chat windows. In one-on-one chats, the button initially appears as a voice call icon, but tapping it opens a menu where users can choose between a voice or video call, streamlining the process and eliminating unnecessary navigation.
A key improvement in group chats allows users to select specific members to call rather than automatically ringing all participants. This new feature is expected to be particularly beneficial for large group conversations, ensuring that only relevant members are contacted when needed.
Another significant enhancement is the ability to create and share call links directly from the new call menu. Users can now generate a link and share it with others, allowing them to join a call without the need for manual invitations or entering phone numbers. This addition is expected to facilitate seamless communication, particularly for professional and social interactions.
WhatsApp’s latest update underscores its commitment to improving user experience, making the app more intuitive and efficient. Although currently in the testing phase, the new features are anticipated to be rolled out to a broader audience in the coming weeks.
This update follows another recent enhancement by WhatsApp—the introduction of a voice message transcription feature. This tool, which has begun a global rollout, enables users to convert voice messages into text, catering to situations where listening to audio may not be convenient. Announced in November last year, the feature employs on-device processing to maintain user privacy during transcription. As the rollout continues, more users will gain access to this functionality.
